Judge Mathis Opens Up About Divorce and Hopes for Reconciliation
Judge Greg Mathis is facing a personal challenge as his wife, Linda Mathis, filed for divorce after nearly 40 years of marriage. The 61-year-old TV judge, known for his long-running show Mathis Court with Judge Mathis, publicly addressed the separation, acknowledging that his neglect and busy schedule contributed to the breakdown of their relationship.
In a candid interview, Mathis admitted that his work commitments, community involvement, and time spent with friends often took priority over his marriage. However, he firmly denied that infidelity played a role in their split.
“My wife has been third,” Mathis explained, highlighting how his career and personal interests left little room for Linda. He emphasized that while neglect may have caused suspicion, there were no affairs or extreme allegations like secret children or inappropriate behavior behind their separation.
Mathis clarified that his absence and failure to prioritize his marriage were the primary reasons for the divorce filing. Despite the difficulties, Mathis expressed optimism about their future, stating he is determined to win Linda back. The couple continues to share a home, and Mathis hopes that by demonstrating his commitment to change, he can repair their relationship before the divorce is finalized.
Mathis and Linda’s relationship began in college, and they married in 1985, long before Mathis rose to fame as a TV judge. Over the years, they navigated the challenges of his career together, but the strain of his professional commitments eventually took its toll.
Reflecting on his actions, Mathis admitted that even after relocating his show to Los Angeles in 2023, he struggled to break old habits. “When the show moved, I promised to stay home more and make Linda my priority. But here I am, still traveling and doing the same things,” he said.
The couple’s bond dates back to their college days, and Mathis acknowledged the depth of their shared history. He described Linda as his lifelong partner and expressed regret that his actions may have made her feel sidelined. “I have to show her that I can change,” Mathis said, reinforcing his hope that their relationship can be saved.
Amid the public nature of their separation, Mathis sought to dispel damaging rumors. Addressing speculation head-on, he told TMZ, “There’s no baby, no scandal, and no inappropriate behavior. I was just too busy, and that created suspicion.” Mathis emphasized the importance of being present in a relationship, warning others not to let work and personal interests overshadow their partners.
Judge Mathis has built a legacy as the longest-running Black male TV host and the second-longest reigning courtroom arbitrator in history, following Judge Judy Sheindlin. His achievements include receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2022. Despite his professional success, Mathis admitted that personal fulfillment requires balance.
For now, Mathis and Linda are focused on maintaining their friendship as they navigate this transitional period. “I’m trying to get my wife back. Hopefully, I can show her the changes I’m making while we’re still under the same roof,” Mathis said.
As the couple continues to live together, Mathis remains hopeful that the divorce process won’t be finalized. “I’m going to get my wife back,” he said with confidence, demonstrating his determination to repair the relationship that has been central to his life for nearly four decades.
