Seven-year-old Max couldn’t contain his excitement. Clutching his backpack, he sprinted out of school, his mind buzzing with thoughts of the day ahead.
His mom had promised to take him to the movies to see a film about a brave astronaut exploring strange new worlds. For Max, who loved everything about space—from the glowing stars to shiny rocket ships—it was a day he had been counting down to all week.
As the school bell rang, Max dashed through the hallway, his eyes scanning the line of cars outside. But his mom’s car was nowhere to be seen.
She’s just running late, he thought, brushing it off at first. One by one, his friends climbed into their cars, waving goodbye.
Even his best friend Lucas called out, “Have fun at the movies!” Max grinned and waved back, feeling a little proud that today was special—just a day for him and his mom.
But slowly, the street emptied. Teachers left, locking the school doors behind them, giving Max a quick wave. The minutes ticked by, and the excitement in his chest began to fade.
Alone now, a chilly breeze swept through the quiet street. Hugging his backpack tightly, Max tried to ignore the growing pit in his stomach. Mom wouldn’t forget. She promised.
Max sat on the steps, his small shoulders slumped, tears beginning to prick at his eyes. As he wiped them away, trying to stay brave, the hum of a car made him look up. A sleek car pulled up in front of him and didn’t drive away. A man with a kind, curious expression leaned out the window. “Hey there, buddy,” the man said in a friendly voice. “You waiting for someone?”
Max sniffled, trying not to cry again. “My mom was supposed to pick me up, but… she’s late.”
The man nodded thoughtfully. “Tell you what,” he said with a smile, “I’ve got a few minutes. How about we wait together?”
The man’s calm and kind demeanor made Max feel a little safer. “Okay,” he mumbled shyly.
The man extended his hand and introduced himself. “My name’s Elon.”
Max blinked in surprise. Elon? As in Elon Musk?
Indeed, it was Elon Musk. That day, Musk had been heading to routine meetings nearby, but as his car passed the school, he noticed Max sitting there alone.
Something made him stop—perhaps a tug of empathy from his own experiences as a father. Now, he was sitting with Max on the school steps, talking about space and astronauts.
“I know a thing or two about space,” Elon said, his face lighting up. “Did you know astronauts train for years just to get ready for space travel?
They even learn how to sleep standing up because there’s no gravity!”
Max’s eyes widened, his curiosity taking over. “They float when they sleep?” he asked, fascinated.
“Exactly!” Elon grinned. “And when they’re up there, they see Earth as one big, beautiful planet—all the oceans, the continents, everything.”
Max gasped, his sadness momentarily forgotten. “Wow. Have you been to space?”
“Not yet,” Elon replied with a twinkle in his eye, “but I’m working on it. Someday, I want to make it possible for anyone to go to space. Maybe even you.”
