Jennifer Lopez Files for Divorce from Ben Affleck After Two Years of Marriage
Jennifer Lopez has officially filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, marking the end of their two-year marriage. The 55-year-old singer and actress filed on August 20th, the exact day of their second wedding anniversary, following their lavish ceremony in Georgia.
Sources close to the couple claim the timing was intentional, chosen to send a strong message.
According to insiders, Lopez cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. However, sources told the Daily Mail that Lopez was tired of feeling humiliated by Affleck. “Jennifer said she was done being embarrassed by Ben. She chose their anniversary because she wanted it to sting,” one insider revealed.
Despite Lopez’s efforts to make a statement, Affleck, 52, was reportedly emotionally detached from the relationship for some time. “He’s been over it for a while, and deep down, Jennifer knows this. He let her have this moment so she wouldn’t look like the bad guy,” another source added.
The divorce filing listed April 26, 2024, as their official separation date. Lopez requested to waive spousal support and asked the court to deny Affleck any financial support as well. Additionally, she filed to legally drop “Affleck” from her last name.
The couple did not have a prenuptial agreement, according to TMZ. Speculation about their relationship issues began circulating earlier in the year when Lopez attended the 2024 Met Gala alone. Her solo red carpet appearance sparked rumors of trouble in their marriage.
Further signs of separation emerged when the couple did not celebrate Lopez’s 55th birthday or their anniversary together in July. Affleck was later seen moving out of their $60 million home and into a rental property. He has since purchased a $20.5 million home, and their shared mansion is now on the market.
Lopez was spotted visiting Affleck’s rental home briefly around his 52nd birthday, but later attended a Bruno Mars concert alone. At the concert, she danced to Mars’ song Marry Me, a poignant nod to the film she starred in with Affleck.
Their relationship has seen many ups and downs over the years. Lopez and Affleck initially began dating in 2002 and were engaged by 2003. However, they called off the engagement in 2004.
Nearly two decades later, they rekindled their romance, marrying in a low-key ceremony at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas in July 2022. A more elaborate wedding followed at Affleck’s estate in Georgia in August of that year.
Reflecting on their reunion, Lopez previously shared how their relationship had matured. “We’re older, wiser, and more experienced now. It’s beautiful that this happened at this point in our lives where we can appreciate and respect each other more deeply,” she told People at the time.
Affleck, who shares three children—Violet (18), Seraphina (15), and Samuel (12)—with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner, has faced public scrutiny regarding his relationships in the past. Lopez, mother to 16-year-old twins Emme and Max with ex-husband Marc Anthony, is also no stranger to navigating love in the public eye.
As Lopez steps forward into this new chapter, she remains focused on reclaiming her power and staying true to herself.
